A Television Today

The word television or so-called TV derives from Greek and Latin. In, Greek tele means far, while in Latin vision or visio means sight. In the simple way, we could say that TV has a function showing pictures through a long distance. Historically, there was no single inventor of television. Because since it was invented, there were many peoples working together and alone contributed to the evolution of TV. But we could probably note the first person to transmit a simple image over wires in 1892 that he was Abbe Giovanna Caselli.
Currently, TV has more sophisticated dimension of use and technology. It is not only used for entertainment, but also for looking after the peace and social democracy in international relations. For instance, TV has been used for teleconferences in several diplomatic ceremonies among countries. Furthermore, TV has been a greatest instrument for spreading out the values of social and democracy to the worldwide. Even in the evolution of TV, it has been a technology to be brought everywhere.
Meanwhile, the debates on advantages and disadvantages of television have been increasingly discussed on academics or media itself. On the one hand, they asserted that TV has significantly been useful for the people life by several reasons. First, TV gives us much more information we need. Some programs really deserve our attention. More than exciting, the evolution of TV brings us to interactive era. So the viewer doesn’t passively watch the programs, but he also can interfere in action such as arguing or giving opinions on the TV live talks. Second, in the more amazing level, TV has been a cheapest media to takes us around the world. In fact, we don’t need to spend much money if we want to look up Sphinx historical sculpture or the beautiful beach in Hawaii. We only need a remote to remove the programs such as National Geographic Channel. Third, TV has been recently used in educational programs. A few researches proved that TV became an easy media to transform the knowledge and science.
On the other hand, TV also has the harmful effects for the people life. We commence to enumerate from the most tangible effect. First, The westernization, which performs liberalism, has been a greatest campaign in many TV programs. We are used to forgetting that not all of the TV programs have been appropriate for us or another part of our life. We could take “an adult show” that offered almost every time in international channel as an example. We could imagine how it absolutely affects to the children behaviour in daily life. Second, the consumerism increasingly threatens the people’s future. It particularly comes about in developing countries as a result of colonialism and imperialism in the past. We could look up how the people now are in “a hyper lifestyle” with the west oriented. Everyone purchases everything is not because they need or the use and utility of what he purchases. But it is only for satisfying a life style necessity and prestigious.
Briefly, TV might negatively or positively influence our life depends on how we use it. Therefore, the people who conscious about the good and the bad of TV had better control the use of TV as a preventive action. The parents’ advises to their children, for example, are better than leaving them alone when watching TV.
However, I think we couldn’t stop watching TV. The globalization and transnationalism demand us to understand everything around us. In this era, we might become an “alien”, if we didn’t have any sufficient information sources. Hence, by watching TV we would get unlimited information and knowledge. Although we have to be carefully in “consuming” any kind of information we get from TV.
